Driver Ed Rules & Resources

High School Students under the age of 19 are required to take driver education.  If you have graduated please enroll in an adult program.

OBTAINING A LEARNER'S PERMIT

You may obtain your entry-level learner permit to drive if you are at least 15 years of age:

  • Schedule a learner permit appointment at the Driver License Office
  • Your photo will be taken and you must pass a vision test.
  • Provide proof of identity. View the required documentation.
  • Parent/legal guardian must sign for financial responsibility (17 and under only)
  • Must pass the written knowledge test.

If you are 15, 16, or 17 years old, the learner permit entitles you to operate a regular motor vehicle only if a licensed driving instructor, parent, or legal guardian is occupying the seat beside you. Be sure you know all driving restrictions for this age group.

If you are 18 years or older, the learner permit entitles you to operate a regular motor vehicle only if a licensed driver that is 21 years of age or older is occupying the seat beside you.

If you are 19 years and older, driver education is not required.  Must enroll with an adult only program. 

OBTAINING A DRIVER'S LICENSE

If coming from another state with a certificate of completion, that certificate may be accepted if the course hours are at least 18 hours classroom, 6 hours driving, and 6 hours observation.

Drivers 16 and 17 years of age:

  • Must pass a written test and apply for a learner permit 
  • Must hold the Utah learner permit for a minimum of 6 months
  • Must complete a driver education course
  • Must complete 40 hours of practice driving (10 at night)
  • Must have a parent's signature on the application
  • Must pass a driving skills test

Drivers 18 years of age and still in high school:

  • Must pass a written test and apply for a learner permit (no minimum time required)
  • Must complete a driver education course
  • Must pass a driving skills test

Drivers 19 years of age: (Must enroll with an adult only program. Driver Ed is not required)

  • Must pass a written test and apply for a learner permit
  • Must complete a driver education course or hold a Utah learner permit for a minimum of 90 days and have completed 40 hours of practice driving (10 at night)
  • Must pass a driving skills test
